Goal setting could ensue in the early part of life, before entering the professional world; or it might be sometime later in life, when you are thinking about a career change. It’s importance increases from the fact that it will support your livelihood, and it will be something that you will be involved with every day in your life.
    Setting A Goal
There are various things that count when you want to set a career goal. The career you choose should be one that you love. If you enjoy your work, it will not seem like work at all. If you love your work, and think that what you are doing is important, it will not only give you tremendous satisfaction, but it will also improve your productivity, and help you progress on your career path. You should know what you desire in life, and once that is known you need to tirelessly and dedicatedly follow the chosen path.
Often, we are not too sure what we want to achieve. But, choosing a career with the kind of work you love doing will definitely help you in the long run. Your chosen career should be such that it brings out your talents, and that those are put to creative use. After working in a different field for some time, I moved into writing. This was something I had always enjoyed doing (but frankly, never thought of as a profession). However, now my work is more like a pleasure and I am enjoying every moment of it.
Though I got into writing quite by chance, and I was lucky enough to “accidentally” get into the field that I loved, this will not necessarily be the case with everyone. That is why it is important at the beginning that you chose a career doing something that you actually like doing.
    The Money
For most of the people dissatisfied with their profession, the most common factor is money. You should evaluate the kind of money you will be able to make in your chosen profession. Can it take care of your long-term needs? Is it because of money (or the lack thereof) that you are thinking about changing your profession?
Though loving and enjoying your work is important, for practical purposes, money also needs to be considered. You should strive to strike a balance between your love for a particular job and the money you can make. Everybody has different priorities, and it is you, who will need to decide and set your priorities. It is a universally accepted fact that some professions pay more than others. But the general trend is that if the economy is strong, all professions do well, and people, in general earn good money. However, bad times affect different people and different professions in different ways.
Thus, it is evident that you pay good attention to setting your career goals, it definitely helps in the long run. Goal setting should be done with a clear mind, great determination and focus.

Everyone wants to write a book. At least that’s what they tell me when I introduce myself as a book writing coach. Yet, rarely do they follow through to write a book. It is just a magical dream, thought, or idea because there are hundreds of reasons why they can’t do it. We know the reasons: no time; busy; don’t know how; it’s a giant step; my family needs me, and so on.
In our personal and business lives we know how important it is to set goals to achieve our dreams. When we want to write a book we have to use the same goal setting principles. If you want to become an author, a successful writer, you are more apt to succeed if you have a plan.
Author and motivational speaker, Brian Tracy, tells us that, “Every single life only becomes great when the individual sets upon a goal or goals which they really believe in, which they can really commit themselves to, which they can put their whole heart and soul into.”
This is the key: First believe, then commit, and finally put your whole heart and soul into it. Are you ready to begin? Do you have the passion? If you answered, “Yes,” then you can write a book! Let’s get started by using some goal setting techniques to get you going.
Here are the 7.5 goal setting tips you can use to help you write a book:
    1. The Dream
Identify your book idea. This is your expert topic that you know so well. This is your dream. Tell yourself right now, “I am writing a book about (name the topic).”
    2. Clear Picture
Can you visualize the content of your book? Start writing down the chapter topic ideas. Don’t worry about the order, just write them down. Keep on writing down your ideas so that you get the “big picture.” Your dream should be much clearer to you now.
    3. The Plan
Take your book idea and your chapter topics and put them in an order that makes sense to you. Add anything else to your outline that can help make your book a reality. Can you visualize your book now? Is it becoming real to you?
    4. Set Dates
Get your appointment book out and start reserving some time each week to write your great book. Even if it’s only 20 minutes to start, write it down and reserve the time. You could write a chapter a week if you set aside 60 minutes. In order for this to work you must have developed your Plan in number 2. The more prepared you are the easier it will be to write your book.
    5. Plan of Action
It helps to have a plan of action for everything you need to do to write a book. In addition to number 2 The Plan, you need to identify the other tasks that need to be done such as research, phone calling, people you need such as editors, coaches, publishing info, etc. Get a good book, or search the Internet, for a list of the things you need to do to write your book.
    6. Get a Mentor or Buddy
Find a like-minded friend to help keep you on target. Give him or her your PLAN and ask them to remind you of your committed dates. Have them encourage you while writing. Ask them to hold you accountable to your scheduled dates. Better yet, find a mentor or writing coach that can guide and direct you during your book-writing journey.
    7. Take Action
Only YOU can complete your goal to write a book. You have to go through all the obstacles in your life to finish the book such as writer’s block, need more information, conflict for your time from family and business, etc. No one can write your book unless you hire a ghostwriter. Even then you must allow time to share your ideas, concepts, and chapter ideas with him or her. Only you can make your dream come true. Only you know how important your book is to your clients. You know it will give them solutions to their problems. You know it will give you the credibility you deserve.
    7.5. Stay Up-to-Date
I added a half step to remind you that you need to stay up-to-date on your writing skills and knowledge. Get some good reference books on how to write a book proposal, how to find a literary agent, how to self-publish (if that’s your choice), and other materials you need to write a book. Attend a writer’s retreat that fits your writing category, meet authors and ask questions, and anything else that can keep you committed to writing your great book.
You now have 7.5 ways to set writing goals to accomplish your dream to write a book. Can you see now that writing a book deserves the same type of attention needed to accomplish any goal? Now, go back to Step 1 and take a baby step and tell five friends that, “I am writing a book about (your idea).” Now you are committed.

For the majority of us, our New Year’s Resolution has now come and gone. Maybe our promises were too big for us, maybe they were not affordable, maybe we needed help from others and they just didn’t cooperate, whatever the reason, all hope is not lost.

Most of us talk to our children about their future. The majority of our conversations regarding their desired future require goal setting skills. How can our children set and achieve their goals when we aren’t setting the example? Instead of taking the risk that they will learn our bad habits, make a plan of action that involves practicing what we preach.

Pick a consistent day and time of the week for goal setting. For example, when the family is gathered together for dinner on Sunday, make a routine of discussing the goal for the next week. It can be as simple as scrubbing out the dog dishes, shaking and washing all of the rugs in the house, writing a distant relative a letter, etc. If the goal is complicated and lengthy, break the plan of action into smaller segments and discuss the accomplishments while planning the next stage.

Remember though, all goals do not need to be labor intensive. Some goals can be for pure pleasure. I remember when my children were very young; I wanted them to enjoy classic books. Several nights a week we put pillows on the floor, made popcorn and read together. These are valuable memories I still hold dear.

Whatever your goals are, short term, long term, work oriented, time sensitive or for enjoyment as a family, set the goal. Discuss the plan of action to accomplish the goal. The results will be more than worth the effort!

I’m going to get straight to the point with this article so give it a quick read and enjoy. I hope it helps give you some insight on accomplishing something you have wanted to do for awhile.
It might sound ridiculous that goal setting could actually hold you back from completing tasks and dreams you may have. But it seems like everyone tells you should be setting goals for everything you want to accomplish, short tem and long term. Goals can help you sometimes, but in some cases they just lead to constant frustration and they actually bring you down.
Let’s look at this a little closer with an example a lot of people might set forth as a goal. Many people jump online and are looking to start a business online as a way to make money from home and let’s say they set a goal to make $10,000 in their first month. They do this because they seem tons of people making large sums of money in very little time so they think, $10,000 a month, that shouldn’t be to hard.
But what happens when you only bring in $1,000 in your first 30 days online. If this is pure profit you might still be happy but this is no where near reaching the goal you originally set out to meet. So naturally you would feel like you failed to reach your goal and you may be a little disappointed in yourself.
If you continue to not reach this goal month in month out it starts to addup and really weigh on you. Goals have there place and I’m not saying that they are bad and you shouldn’t set them but you need to realize that you should not be emotionally attached to your goals.
An alternative approach would be to set certain milestones for when you want to accomplish things and start out small. Build your confidence by accomplishing smaller feats and if you over produce then it will be a nice surprise. You have to have some sort of end result in mind but break it down in to a day by day task. This makes it a lot easier for you to handle by just knowing everyday you have to complete a few small tasks and over time the snowball into accomplishing great things.
Another helpful tip is to really imagine your lifestyle everyday as if you have already reached the lifestyle you want. His helps crystallize your vision and gives you the fortitude to continue even when you feel down.

Goal setting is an important part of making progress no matter what you are trying to do. Small incremental steps are needed to both boost confidence and to measure progress. No company can go from nothing to a powerhouse overnight. There are a multitude of tiny steps in between. This is how we run our company. We know that we aren’t the most successful company on the planet, but we have a vision in our heads of where we want to be in 2 years. The only way to reach that huge goal is to set smaller goals along the way for us to achieve. I like to think of it as a ladder. If you’re climbing a ladder up to a high point, you can’t take one step and skip the rest to the top. It’s impossible to do this with a ladder, and it’s impossible to do this in business. There is no easy way to reach the top; it takes hard work and discipline.

A similar way that I look at goal setting is in weightlifting. Weightlifting is a hobby that I have enjoyed now for over a year. It’s lots of fun and it keeps me in shape. Goal setting is a crucial part of any weightlifter’s training. If I wanted to lift a heavy weight that was beyond my ability, I can’t just lift it anyway. My body simply won’t allow me to do this. The way I can do it is to lift slightly heavier weights each time until my muscles have adapted sufficiently. These smaller increases are goals that lead me to my much bigger goals. Each time I reach these smaller goals, my confidence increases and it drives me to my ultimate goal. This can be applied to sports, business or anything else in life. I feel this confidence drive me in business. When I set a goal of increasing the number of people in my network by 10 in one month, and I make it, it makes me wonder if I can do even better. I find myself wanting to top myself each and every time. Every small goal that I achieve gives me more drive to do better.

Right now, the Internet is a great place to go if you’re interested in anything related to goals. For example, a number of sites offer some great goal setting forms that can help you write down (or type up) the achievements you’d like to have in your life. These forms give us some much needed structure when it comes to preparing our goals. Before you start brainstorming your future, here are a couple of tips to help you make the most of these useful tools.Be Optimistic but RealisticIf you want to be a good goal setter, you have to walk the fine line between optimism and realism. Basically, you also want to be hoping for the best but planning for the worst if you’re going to be successful. Unfortunately, too many of us end up falling on one end of the spectrum or the other. We’re either too pessimistic to write goals at all or too dreamy to write goals we have any chance of obtaining.Be Emotional about GoalsWhen you do start writing down your goals with these goal setting forms, don’t take the activity lightly. This is not a “What I Did Over the Summer” school assignment that can be blown off and forgotten once it’s finished. Instead, these goals should have meaning for you because they represent the path you want your life to take. And if you’re serious about reaching whatever is at the end of your goals, you have to take them seriously. If you don’t, they won’t be any more useful to you than a New Year’s resolution on January 3rd.Repeat Your GoalsFollowing your goals should ideally become a habit – something you do without even thinking about it. But this type of automatic behavior doesn’t happen overnight. To reach that level, research has shown you need repetition. When you write down a goal, your conscious mind is in charge and is doing all of the thinking. What you want, however, is for that goal to become part of your unconscious mind like driving a car or riding a bicycle. The best way to make this happen is through repetition. Make a habit of repeating your goals to yourself at least five times a day.Reward YourselfYou have your completed goal setting forms and now you have successfully obtained one of them. What do you do next? Well, you’ll start working on the next goal for starters. But that’s not all. You should also take a moment (or more) to congratulate yourself on a job well done. This is going to motivate you to keep working harder to achieve the next goals. How you congratulate yourself is up to you but make sure it’s something special that you enjoy. Also, it doesn’t hurt to have a ritual for goal achievement. For example, before you cross the goal off the list, you might have a glass of wine.

Goal setting is a crucial aspect of your life that needs maximum focus if you are targeting personal, professional, monetary or even spiritual growth. Life would become much complicated if you don’t act prudently and enlist your goals from the highest to lower priority. An average individual has the habit of taking things for granted and lives a busy life without a focus. The schedule is so hectic that there is no time for setting up goals and a clear timetable for their achievement. However, a life without goals is just like a ship without a radar and you keep on running without making an effort to reach your target. Even before you realize, time passes by and then there is nothing left except to long for the time that has lapsed.

    Learning the Secrets
When we talk of goal setting, it is not necessarily in term of money, family or professional achievements, we are talking of life’s goals in a broader perspective encompassing all aspects of living. If you are honest enough then close your eyes and travel in the magnificent world of your mind. There must be a hidden desire in the depths of your mind that you have not given an opportunity to materialize all these years. For instance, a tax consultant must be a gifted composer but has never realized the need to express that to the world. The primary reason for this is lack of goal setting and ignoring the most important aspect of his/her personality. You should have the ability to enlist your desires and then tabulate those desires in form of concrete, definable and achievable goals with a time frame attached to each goal.

The secret of goal setting and their achievement lies in taking a more constructive approach and adhering to the principles of time management. That can help a great deal at the end of the day in achieving your goal. You are the sole master of every day you spend in your life and how you spend it. The secret is in making a list of your bigger goals and then breaking them up into small targets with a clear time frame such as week, month or a year. This would help you analyze whether or not you are proceeding in the right direction.

Stop dreaming at this very moment and start giving practical shape to your dreams. Any further procrastination for goal setting would only hinder the success of your goals. Provide sufficient time for goal setting to create an example for others to follow. It is error of judgment on your part if you think that you can start it from tomorrow; do it today for your own sake.

Have you ever read the autobiography of a great financier or businessman of the past? How about the biography of a successful inventor or scientist? Most of the great achievers in life were natural born goal setters. They started at an early age to challenge themselves to reach the next objective. The rest of us need to develop the skill in order to make our dreams into reality. Goal setting forms a road map to the destination of fulfilled dreams. You know you want to achieve the goal. The question is how to get there.

Goals are best organized by area of life and then by the “due date.” For instance, if you want to really achieve the life you dream of, it is a good idea to set goals in areas like social/community life, spiritual growth, and health/fitness as well as job, career, or finances. Focusing only on your career, while it is a central issue, can make you into a lopsided work-a-holic who is really not enjoying life in spite of achieving your goals.

Once you have a general idea of the direction you want to go in the different areas of life, think about where you would need to be in three months from now if you were to reach your ten year goal. This takes some consideration, and it is not essential that you get it perfect. In fact, perfectionism will actually keep you from reaching your goals.

Perfectionism, by the way, tends to exacerbate procrastination, which is a major killer of goals and dreams. Often the reason we procrastinate is because we have trouble making up our minds. The reason we have trouble making decisions is that we are afraid we won’t make the perfect decision. In fact, you may be putting off making goals right this minute! Don’t let fear of a less than perfect job of goal setting keep you from taking the first step in setting them.

Think also about where you need to be in six months, or a year, or three years, in order to eventually achieve that dream life. Would you like to be a successful speaker, writer, athlete, or performing artist? Then goal setting will help you get your educational requirements and practice schedule nailed down. These dream professions are never attained without hard work and many hours of disciplined practice.

Here is one word of caution, though, as you dream big, and write down your goals. Make sure you are being realistic about the outcome of these goals. Do they conflict with your basic feelings about ethics or morality? Or are you thinking that reaching a certain goal will fulfill your every emotional need? We are complex, holistic beings who have a range of needs. No one goal, dream, or even person will ever fill that bill. Some find a great deal of peace through their religious faith, but there will still be challenges that test even this rock of stability. Keep this in mind as you set those goals and dream those dreams.
